Kickin’ with Kenya 2010 is a cross country bike ride designed to raise funds for a sustainable education project in Nairobi, Kenya. The journey is straightforward: a fresh start in Oxford, Ohio-followed by 2,800 miles through 9 states before pulling in to Tacoma, Washington. This will be a self-supported ride (meaning that I will be carrying my own cooking and sleeping supplies), over the course of 33 days. I look forward to good company from my wife and brother for a few days, and dad, during the second half of the trip-while riding solo through a good chunk of the American Heartland.
All of the proceeds for this trip will go to Dagoretti 4 Kids (D4K), a small non-profit organization on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya. D4K rehabilitates street kids to improve their physical, social, and spiritual well-being, and supports kids’ entry and ongoing success in local primary and secondary schools. D4K works partners with Center for Transforming Mission-Nairobi and Seattle-based Fluid Foundation to seek leadership support and micro-finance counsel.

The problem: Funding education
Currently, D4K supports 27 kids (several others have already graduated and are working in Nairobi in various capacities) and pays a total of $17,000 annually for school fees, transportation, uniforms, and supplies. Among their other operating costs, this money is a constant struggle for D4K leaders to raise annually. To learn more about D4K, please visit their website at www.dagoretti4kids.org.
The solution: Chickens
As a creative solution, D4K is working with Kenya’s largest fast food restaurant chain to become certified as a chicken supplier. With ongoing help from kids in their program, the surrounding community, and initial donations to help purchase the materials for certified coops, D4K will be able to sustain their commitment to education through their chicken farm operation.
A way forward: Helping with initial expenses
As a way to fund this sustainable education initiative, please consider pledging your support for Kickin’ with Kenya 2010. Thanks to the help of matching donors, 200% of your donation will go to D4K for the initial overhead of the chicken project. You will also receive a tax deductible receipt noting your gift amount. You might consider pledging by the mile, for each state passed through, or an overall gift (1 cent/mile=$28.00; $5/state = $45.00; Overall gift= $100). My goal is to raise $2800-$3000 ($1/mile) for a grand total of $5600-$6000 in start-up costs.
